How Do I Attach My Cooking Grid to My Multi-Rack?
Good question! There are two kinds of Multi-Racks, so first we need to determine which one you have.
Standard Multi-Rack
Description
If you have our standard Multi-Rack, two of the posts will have one inward-facing hook to hold onto your cooking grid and two posts will have two inward-facing hooks.

Placement
Your Multi-Rack sits on top of your firebox. The side with the metal rings rests on the firebox, while the side with the arms or posts face up in the air. The posts are what your cooking grids hook onto.
Attaching the Cooking Grids
To use the top level of the Multi-Rack, take one of your Multi-Grid halves and attach the round side to a post with a single hook, making sure both far ends of the half grid attach to both posts with two hooks. Do the same thing with the other half grid. Each half grid should be attached to opposite sides and hooks of each other.

If you want to place either half of your Multi-Grid down near the charcoal for a more intense cook, simply tilt it so it slips past the hooks, then let it rest on the bottom level.
SG18/22 Multi-Rack
Description
If you have our SG18/22 Multi-Rack, all four posts will have one inward-facing hook to hold onto your cooking grid. Each hook will be at a 45 degree angle, and face one of the other hooks.

Placement
Your Multi-Rack sits on top of your firebox. The side with the metal rings rests on the firebox, while the side with the arms or posts face up in the air. The posts are what your cooking grids hook onto.
Attaching the Cooking Grids
Please note that you can’t use an SG18/22 Multi-Rack with a Multi-Grid (our two-piece cooking grid). You must have the Primary Cooking Grid.
To use the top level of the SG18/22 Multi-Rack:
- Make sure it’s turned so that the hooks point perpendicular from the front of the grill. In other words, if you’re standing in front of the grill, two hooks on the SG18/22 Multi-Rack should point away from you and two should point toward you.
- Take your Primary Cooking Grid and attach the grid’s top bars that run along the entire length of the cooking grid to the posts. Again, be sure the Multi-Rack is turned so that when the bars on the top of the cooking grid are running parallel to the front of your grill, the hooks on the Multi-Rack are perpendicular to the bars and will hook onto the bars.
If you want to place your Primary Cooking Grid down near the charcoal for a more intense cook, simply turn the Primary Cooking Grid 90 degrees so the bars slip past the hooks, then let it rest on the bottom level. You can tell the Primary Cooking Grid will slip past the hooks by paying attention to the bars the run along the top of the grid.

How Do I Clean My Saffire Grill and Ceramic Accessories?
- Remove your ash on a regular basis to maintain proper air flow.
- Use high heat, 500° to 550° F, for around 30 minutes to burn off the grease and smoke buildup (creosote) from the internal ceramic components and accessories. Note that cooking at 500° F or hotter from time to time will do to keep your grill clean.
- Ceramic components and accessories can be scraped with a plastic brush or scraper (not a wire brush). Regular cleaning is not necessary.
- It is a good practice to occasionally clean your chimney top. You can carefully wipe it down with a soft cloth before it fully cools to remove grease build-up on the outside. We recommend wearing gloves while doing so. Stainless steel chimney tops can be taken off and hand-washed with a non-chlorine dish detergent degreaser in hot water. This will prevent grease build-up, which can prevent it from opening or closing when it cools.
- You can wipe your Saffire grill down with a terry cloth or microfiber towel to spruce up the exterior. Lemon Pledge works nicely to shine up the exterior of your Saffire. Be sure to wipe all the pledge free of your grill before starting the grill.
- Periodically remove your internal components to clean out any pieces of lump or ash from around the firebox or fire ring.
- We suggest using a stainless steel or copper wire brush on your grids before you cook. Get the grill hot (500° F) for 5 to 10 minutes to burn off food leftovers. Brush the grids, close the lid and slow the grill down with the Air Controls. Finally, a good way to finish cleaning and prepare the grid for food is to wipe it with a cloth soaked with vegetable or olive oil. You can use your grill brush to aid in the application. A small piece of cloth will normally stick to the wire brush quite well. Do this just before putting food on the grill. This also helps to remove any bristles that may have been left on the cooking grid from the brush, which can be dangerous if swallowed.
- DO NOT USE HARSH CHEMICALS TO CLEAN YOUR GRILL.

How Do I Maintain My Saffire Grill?
Your Saffire Grill is a high performance machine, capable of cooking from 150-750 degrees Fahrenheit. Regular contraction and expansion across a wide temperature range could occasionally require maintenance. Periodically check your nuts for tightness and adjust. Check your temperature gauge and probe, and interior components. If you have any questions, contact Saffire Grills through our Contact page.

How Do I Make My Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan Last as Long as Possible?
If you want your Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan to last as long as possible, here are a few tips to follow:
- Ash acts as an insulator and also blocks air-flow. When you allow ash to reach all the way up near the Charcoal Basket, you’re doing two things: 1) restricting air-flow to your charcoal, which makes it take longer to get the grill up to temperature, and 2) putting more heat-stress on the Charcoal Basket. Think about it, when ash builds up right underneath the basket, heat from the charcoal builds up around the basket too, making the basket even hotter. You won’t notice how hot the Charcoal Basket is getting up where the food is, but that stainless steel basket sure will! Keep the basket cool for more years of use: clean out the ash before it gets up near your Charcoal Basket.
- The bane of steel is greasy, salty drippings. You love to smoke in your Saffire, and we do too, but if you get a lot of salty grease dripping off your food every time you smoke, there’s a few things you can do. First, consider using something to catch the drippings, like an aluminum foil drip pan. Second, if you still find a lot of grease down on your ash pan, consider wiping the grease off as often as you think is necessary. It only takes a second, and your Ash Pan will thank you.

How Do I Start My Saffire Kamado?
Starting your Saffire is easy!
How to Start Your Saffire Grill
Here are the steps to start your Saffire grill.
- Clean the ash out of your charcoal from the cook before.
- Clean the ash out of your grill, if there is considerable ash build up at the bottom of your grill (underneath your bed of charcoal).
- Open the top and bottom air vents on your grill before lighting.
- Use a natural wood-based fire starter or electric fire starter. Do not use fire starter fuel!
- Leave your Saffire open for 6 minutes after starting so the charcoal can heat up quickly. Don’t leave your grill alone while it’s open, as you could damage your grill and/or start a fire this way!
- Close your grill, but leave the top and bottom air vents fully open until the grill reaches your intended cooking temperature. Note that “fully open” means with the chimney top swiveled open, to allow as much oxygen to flow through your Saffire as possible.
