We have two kinds of Multi-Racks. The regular Multi-Rack will fit all XL grills, and almost all Large grills. We also have a special SG18/22 Multi-Rack. Here’s how to know which one will fit in your grill:

  • All XL grills use the regular Multi-Rack.
  • If you have a Large Saffire that has an inside diameter of about 19″, the regular Multi-Rack will fit without any issues.
  • If your grill has an inside diameter of 18 ¾” or less, we suggest purchasing the SG18/22 Multi-Rack instead.

The Crucible itself will fit inside all of our XL and Large grill sizes.

We recommend getting a Multi-Rack and Heat Deflector with your Crucible. Unfortunately the old single-piece heat deflector with the three tabs on the sides won’t fit in a Crucible.

Please note: if the inside diameter of your grill is 18 3/4″ or less, we recommend getting our SG18/SG22 Multi-Rack instead of the regular Multi-Rack, which is a modified version specifically designed to work in your grill.

The wood on your Saffire grill table is oiled. You can do a search for “how to clean teak or oiled wood” and that should give you an idea about cleaning the wood. Generally, feel free to scrub the wood, but be aware that you might want to apply more oil depending on how hard you scrub, the abrasiveness of the pad and how it looks afterward.

For cleaning a granite top, just look for products that are acceptable to use for cleaning marble/granite.

Saffire’s superior air control allows tighter temperature control without relying on external “bells and whistles.” Air flow is the key. Adjusting your top and bottom vents controls the air flow through your Saffire grill. See the Saffire Manual page 11 for details on suggested settings.

Make sure you have enough lump charcoal in your firebox. Think about your Saffire Grill as a controlled camp fire. What kind of fire are you trying to build? Arrange the lump in your firebox to build a big fire, and fill the firebox to the brim. Visit the Saffire video page and watch the How to Light your Saffire Grill video for details on lighting.

Check to see if your fuel is dry. Think of lump charcoal like you would wood. Wood can hold moisture in even when it looks dry. The same is true of lump charcoal. Make sure you store your charcoal away from the elements, preferably in an air tight, sealed container.

Clear the air holes in your firebox of leftover lump or ashes to ensure proper air flow.
Take a look at your temperature gauge. Contact the Saffire team if it is not reading correctly on the grill or after the “boil test”.

Make sure not to let your grill get too hot. Also see “How Hot is Too Hot for My Saffire?”

For grills with fire grates that hold the charcoal in the firebox, never let the ash build up enough to reach the fire grate. Cutting off some of the air from the bottom of the charcoal makes it burn insanely hot, which can permanently damage your fire grate.

You should check the ash level before each cook, and remove it if it’s building up.

If you live near the ocean, such as in Florida, we recommend the following:

  • Choose the Platinum Saffire. The Platinum Saffire features 304 stainless steel on all external parts (not including the casters), which greatly improves it’s life in the ocean air.
  • Regularly wipe down the external steel on your grill with fresh water. Because ground water near the ocean can be salty too, we recommend having distilled water handy in a spray bottle. You can spritz the steel with fresh water, and then wipe it down to remove salt build-up on the surface and keep it lasting longer.
  • Purchase a grill cover. We recommend getting a grill cover to protect your grill from the salty air when not in use. You still need to wipe your grill down with fresh water from time to time, but a grill cover will help make that work more effective.

This is very easy to do.

  1. Unscrew the Smokin’ Chip Feeder cap.
  2. Put wood chips into the open (half cylinder) end of your Smokin’ Chip Feeder tool.
  3. Slide the chip feeder into the port and rotate it to dump the chips onto the charcoal.
  4. Remove the chip feeder.
  5. Screw the cap back on.

Now you’re in business!

Assembling a Saffire cart is pretty straight forward.

Parts

When you open the box you will have:

  • 4 legs with the wheels already attached: two legs will have locking brake caster wheels, and two will have regular caster wheels without brakes
  • 2 cross-connector pieces with pre-drilled screw holes
  • 16 screws to assemble the cart
  • 8 felt liners with a peel away sticky backing, to protect the grill from scratches.

Cart Assembly

Take one of the legs with a locking caster wheel and turn it so the caster wheel is facing up toward you. Insert the two cross-connectors into the openings of the leg, with the flat side of the connector facing up toward you. One cross connector will fit into the top opening of the leg, and the other in the bottom. Put four screws through the leg and the cross-connectors, and tighten them really well.

Take the other leg with a locking caster wheel and insert it into the cross-connectors, next to the one you’ve already inserted. Use four more screws to attach the leg loosely.

You should now have two cart legs left, without locking brakes, to attach. Attach these to the cart next to each other using the remaining screws. Tighten them loosely.

You now have a fully assembled Saffire grill cart. Review the cart to ensure the two locking brake caster wheels are side by side of each other, and the non-locking caster wheels are also side by side of each other. If the locking caster wheels are across from each other, move the legs around so they are side by side.

Tighten all of the screws firmly.

With the cart fully assembled, turn it over onto the caster wheels, face the locking brakes toward you and apply the locking brakes.

Felt Liners

Now apply the protective felt liners, so the cart won’t scratch up your grill.

First you will be applying four protective felt liners to the inside corners of the cart cradle, where the grill will sit. One by one, peel off the paper from the back of four felt liners and apply the sticky side to the inside corners of the cart cradle.

Next you will be apply the remaining four protective felt liners to the vertical support arms of the cart, preferably near the top. One by one, peel off the paper on the back of the felt liners and apply the liners to the inside support arms of the cart.

Ready to Insert the Grill!

With the brakes applied and the felt liners attached, the cart is now ready for the grill to be inserted into the cart cradle.

Note: Remember to insert the grill so it faces the locked brakes! In the future you will appreciate having easy access to the locking brakes while using your grill.
