The Revolutionary Crucible Firebox

The Inside Story
The insulating and radiant heating qualities of ceramics create the perfect environment for cooking and smoking all types of food. But with charcoal burning at upwards of 2,000° F the inner firebox takes a beating producing a rampant amount of breakage in most brands. Staying true to Saffire’s history of ingenuity, we are proud to introduce the most advanced, versatile and durable kamado firebox available.

The Best Design for Kamado Firebox Durability!

  1. Saffire’s 12-brick design greatly relieves thermal stress, eliminating firebox breakage.
  2. Our bricks are rated 1,000° higher than traditional ceramic.
  3. The outer Shell is made of Aluminized Steel
    (High thermal and corrosion resistance)
  4. Even if a brick should crack, it doesn’t matter!
(The shell holds them tightly in place and also prevents any air leakage. In any case, individual bricks can be easily replaced.)
Saffire's patented firebox comes with these features: removable stainless steel charcoal basket (with removable divider), aluminized steel housing a firebrick liner, insulating air gaps for efficiency, and a huge lift-out ash pan

FAQs

Does the New Crucible Firebox Work with My Old Saffire?

The Crucible itself will fit inside all of our XL and Large grill sizes.

We recommend getting a Multi-Rack and Heat Deflector with your Crucible. Unfortunately the old single-piece heat deflector with the three tabs on the sides won’t fit in a Crucible.

If you have an older-style Large grill, either an SG18 or an SG22, we recommend getting our SG18/SG22 Multi-Rack, which is a modified version specifically designed to work in your grill. If you don’t know if you have an SG18 or SG22 Large Saffire, contact us!

What’s the Big Deal About Having a Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan?

Our Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan are a great combo. Why? The basket makes it super easy to shake the ash off your charcoal before each cook. It takes less than five seconds to do. The pan holds a ton of ash, but when it starts to get full it’s really easy to take out and dump the ash into a heat resistant receptacle.

(Never dump hot ash, please! Wait at least 24 hours after your last cook for the ash to fully cool.)

How Do I Make My Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan Last as Long as Possible?

If you want your Charcoal Basket and Ash Pan to last as long as possible, here are a few tips to follow:

  • Ash acts as an insulator and also blocks air-flow. When you allow ash to reach all the way up near the Charcoal Basket, you’re doing two things: 1) restricting air-flow to your charcoal, which makes it take longer to get the grill up to temperature, and 2) putting more heat-stress on the Charcoal Basket. Think about it, when ash builds up right underneath the basket, heat from the charcoal builds up around the basket too, making the basket even hotter. You won’t notice how hot the Charcoal Basket is getting up where the food is, but that stainless steel basket sure will! Keep the basket cool for more years of use: clean out the ash before it gets up near your Charcoal Basket.
  • The bane of steel is greasy, salty drippings. You love to smoke in your Saffire, and we do too, but if you get a lot of salty grease dripping off your food every time you smoke, there’s a few things you can do. First, consider using something to catch the drippings, like an aluminum foil drip pan. Second, if you still find a lot of grease down on your ash pan, consider wiping the grease off as often as you think is necessary. It only takes a second, and your Ash Pan will thank you.
